Mastering magic is one thing but actually making the audience interested is a whole new ball game. It can also be one of the biggest challenges that any magician will face in his career. One thing that all magicians need to possess is the ability to not only grab the attention of the audience but also hold the attention of the audience. It may seem complicated but in actual fact is a very simple process.

1. How to get the attention

Magicians on the TV make it look so easy. They walk up to someone, perform magic and leave. This really isn’t the case and those same magicians may ask 100 people if they want to see some magic before one person says yes. Obviously we don’t see all the No’s because it would make for a very boring television show. Many people will automatically say no without even hearing the word magic. The reason is that most people stopping you in the street are trying to sell you something.

To overcome this it is always a good idea to do something very quick but truly magical. If they like what they see they are more likely to stop and watch what else you can do. So you have their attention but how do you hold on to it?

2. How to hold the attention

If you are performing close-up at parties or social venues then normally most peoples attention will be on the ‘pretty girl’. So you use this to your advantage and get her involved in the magic. Why else do you think so many magicians have their beautiful assistants. It makes for very easy viewing.

Once you have grabbed their attention another way of keeping hold of it is to use as much of their personal items as you can. Don’t use your own mobile phone to do a magic trick when you can simply ask a spectator if you can use theirs. This keeps their attention on you and not on anybody else.
