Spectators go to watch magicians perform because they like to be entertained. It is your job as a magician to make sure they enjoy the show. If they don’t enjoy it, chances are the bad word will soon spread and before you know it, you are performing to empty seats (probably wouldn’t go this far, but you never know).
If you are even thinking about putting on a stage show, you SHOULD have already completely mastered a few magic tricks. By completely mastered I do not mean you have practiced it through a few times, I mean you have practiced it through hundreds of times. Next, you need to be thinking about which magic tricks will be in the show.
If you already know how long you are going to be performing for, you can rehearse the whole show beforehand to make sure your timing is perfect. If it isn’t perfect, it isn’t professional. If you know other magicians, ask if you can rehearse in front of them and get valuable feedback as to if anything is wrong and needs adjusting.
Before the show, make sure that everything you are going to be needing is already set up on the stage. Nothing looks less professional than a magician having to walk back off the stage to get some equipment. Once you hit that stage, you are there until the end, no turning back.
Any time you ask for a volunteer, treat them with the highest of respect. They want the magic trick to succeed just as much as you do. When the magic trick is over, thank them for their time and ask for a round of applause for the volunteer. If you do well on your first stage show it could be a sign of many great shows to come.
Just remember, you can’t practice a couple of times and have a magic trick mastered. It takes time. It takes dedication. Above all else, ALWAYS have fun.
